Mom’s Lemon Cheese Braid

This is a staple of Fortune family Easter celebrations. Whether decorated with dried fruit or brightly-dyed eggs, it’s filled with a delicious lemon cream cheese mix that I hadn’t had for a few years, since my mother used to make it when I was a kid, so I was extra excited when she told me she was baking one up for us this Easter. She thought we were sick of it; it wasn’t that I was sick of it, really, it’s just not as good with store-bought dough, and I’ll be honest — my mom hadn’t had time to make homemade bread dough in a while, and I understood that, but I couldn’t pretend that frozen dough from the grocery store cut the mustard, either. This can be made with your favorite bread recipe, too, to suit your family’s tastes, and you can dress it up however you like for whatever family holiday you’d like to serve it for.

Mom’s Lemon Cheese Braid

  • 1 loaf of bread dough
  • 1 package cream cheese
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp grated lemon zest
  • 1 egg white, beaten

Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix cream cheese, egg yolk, sugar, vanilla, and lemon zest. Roll dough into a rectangle (on a cookie sheet) and spread cream cheese mix down the center. Cut strips of dough and fold them over the cheese filling, alternating to look like a braid. Brush with egg white and bake 30 minutes.
